Torridge District Council is recruiting for non-elected members to join key council committees
Torridge District Council is currently looking for a number of non-elected members to join its Overview & Scrutiny Committee and Audit & Governance Committee.
The council is looking to recruit three non-elected members for its External and Internal Overview & Scrutiny Committees. The external committee manages the process of scrutinising the issues which lie outside the council's responsibilities, for example, health bodies, community safety partnerships and Police and Crime Commissioners.
The Internal Overview & Scrutiny Committee has the power to review the policies of the Council and its objectives and is entitled to 'call in' decisions made by the Community & Resources Committee which are not yet implemented. They can also recommend that the Community & Resources Committee reconsider such a decision. Issues that remain unresolved will be referred to the Full Council for determination.
Torridge District Council is also looking to appoint a Non-Elected Member to sit on the Audit & Governance Committee. This committee provides an independent assurance of the adequacy of the Council's corporate governance arrangements, including an assessment of the effectiveness of the Council's anti-fraud and anti-corruption arrangements, an examination of the authority's financial and non-financial performance and the associated risk management and control environment. The committee also provides an independent review of the authority's exposure to risk or any other such event that may weaken the control environment.
All the roles require the members to attend regular meetings and actively contribute to the debate and discussion of matters arising. It is a great way to get an insight into the work undertaken by the Council and play an active and important role; with plenty of opportunity to take part in training and development programmes to improve your own understanding and skill set.
Applications are available from dem.services@torridge.gov.uk and the closing date is 23 October 2024.
