At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, Torridge District Council Officers and Councillors came together at the Riverbank House flagpole to remember the fallen.

Armistice Day has been observed across the nation every year since 1919. Traditionally, this day serves as a moment for the nation to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifices made by Armed Forces personnel over the years.

In 2025, the nation marked the 80th anniversaries of both Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day, commemorating the end of the Second World War in Europe and the Pacific. These significant milestones were honoured across the UK with a range of events, including remembrance services, beacon lightings and community gatherings. VE Day was observed in May, celebrating peace in Europe, while VJ Day in August paid tribute to those who served in the Far East and helped bring the war to a final close.

Councillor Doug Bushby, Chair of Torridge District Council, said:

"Remembrance offers people of all ages and backgrounds a chance to reflect on the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces, and to share in the hope for a more peaceful future. As a community, it's important that we honour not only those who gave their lives, but also those who continue to serve and their families. By remembering the past, we show our ongoing support for the Armed Forces community today, standing with them in gratitude and solidarity."
