Torridge Commemorates the VE Day 80th Anniversary by raising the Flag of Celebration

On Thursday 8th May, Councillors and Officers at Torridge District Council gathered to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day by raising the 'VE Day Flag of Celebration' at the Riverbank House flagpole in Bideford. The Chair of Torridge District Council, Councillor Doug Bushby, presided over the event and led a two-minute silence to honour those who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought and died for our freedom.
Throughout the district, towns and parishes have come together to mark this important anniversary. With beacon lightings and street parties, the community is truly showcasing its dedication and enthusiasm in organising these events. As a special touch, shop windows across the area are adorned with decorations, all in honour of the monumental day that took place 80 years ago. An amazing tribute to our shared history and a wonderful display of local pride!
Councillor Doug Bushby, Chair of Torridge District Council, commented:
"Today's flag-raising ceremony provides an opportunity for Officers and Councillors to unite in commemorating this significant anniversary. Today we remember those who volunteered, sacrificed, served, fought and died for our freedom. We acknowledge their courage and the lasting impact they have made on our lives.
It is important that we remember that VE Day did not mark the end of the conflict. The war against Japan continued until August 1945, and the political, social, and economic repercussions of the Second World War were felt long after Germany and Japan surrendered."
Later in the summer, on VJ Day, Friday 15th August the National Memorial Arboretum will hold a service to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the war in the Far East.
