Holsworthy Leisure Centre has received over £1,000,000 in funding from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, which provides grants for public sector bodies to fund heat decarbonisation and energy efficiency measures.

The money will be used to install new air to water heat pumps which will replace the existing oil boiler.  The new heating system will not only help to significantly the costs associated with heating the building, swimming pool and hot water, but it will dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

This new round of funding is in addition to £61,000 received from the Government and Sport England's capital investment programme in March this year, which is being used to install new solar panels which will help heat its 25 metre indoor, heated swimming pool.  Torridge District Council is one of 264 local authorities to receive a share of the £60 million fund, which has been set-up to support the long-term sustainability of public leisure.

Additional funding will also come from Torridge District Council's Leisure Reserve, Capital Improvement, Programme and Planned Maintenance Reserve.

Councillor Lyndon Piper, Lead Member for Leisure commented:

"We are delighted that Holsworthy pool has benefited from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme and Sport England's Swimming Pool Support Fund.  The installation of (the new air to water heat pumps, alongside) the solar panels will allow us to improve the sustainability of the pool, by helping to reduce both our operating costs and carbon emissions. The swimming pool is a key community resource for both young and old and these new upgrades will enable us to provide a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective place for future generations to enjoy."

Chris Keeble, Active Torridge said:

"Swimming pools and leisure centres are vital community resources and are enormously important in helping people to be physically active.  Many pools have faced a real and significant threat to their survival this year, as we battle the challenge of increased energy and wider costs.  This funding will enable us to improve our energy efficiency, be more environmentally and financially sustainable."
