Year 10 students from Bideford College recently joined officers at Torridge District Council for a week's work experience program working in various departments, including Customer Services, Property and the Planning Department. The placements were designed to offer students an insight into the world of work and how council services operate and hopefully, through involvement in real life work scenarios, a boost to their skill sets, self-confidence, and emotional development.

The students joined the council for a whole week of placements with many rotating across different departments to get a broad range of experiences. The council also tried to accommodate student's preferences for career progression by matching them with their own choice of work area for at least part of their placements.

Work Experience Student, Imogen said:

"I started the week in Economic Development and was welcomed into the Council by everyone who were really nice. I really enjoyed my experience this week at the Council it helped me gain confidence and team working abilities, I was never bored and was set tasks every day which helped show my potential and learn more from others. I think I have gained a lot of experience for the future and the experience I have had this week will help me throughout life no matter what career I choose. I enjoyed working in customer services and communications. I did a range of activities and made posters, which will appear in the offices. I am really proud of what I have accomplished this week and I recommend it to people who are doing work experience."

Sarah Ayres, Human Resources and Communications Manager said:

"Taking their first steps in a working environment or thinking about their future career can be a big challenge for many students, especially if they are uncertain about which direction this should take. We're delighted to have been able to support a range of work placements to help students gain first-hand experience of working at a Local Government Authority. The Torridge Officers have enjoyed working alongside the students helping them to gain real hands-on experience and further insight into areas that interest them. Anyone can apply for work experience at the Council, and we're happy for anyone who might be interested in a placement to contact us."
