Permitted industrial processes
Torridge District Council is responsible for the permitting and monitoring of certain industrial processes in its area that have a potential to cause pollution, such as petrol stations, dry cleaners, animal food manufacturers, glass manufacturer, etc
The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 specify which industrial processes need permits. Some permits are issued by the Council, but larger installations' permits are provided by the Environment Agency.
All permits contain conditions intended to prevent or minimise pollution and an annual fee is payable, which is set by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) based on the 'polluter pays' principle.
