Flies

Insect icon

Torridge council doesn't have a pest control treatment or identification service.

Most flies can be controlled with insecticides purchased from garden centres/shops, hardware/ironmongers shops, DIY stores, etc. Make sure you read and follow the instructions before using.  Always store away from children and pets.

However, treatment for cluster flies are often ineffective or incomplete and it is often impossible to keep flies from entering premises. Sealing around windows and door frames and other obvious entry points, however, can reduce infestations. Cluster flies do not breed indoors and their presence does not indicate poor hygiene.

There are private pest control companies you may wish to contact, but the council cannot recommend any individual businesses.

In exceptional circumstances where flies are suspected to come from a business premises (eg:  chicken farm), the Environmental Protection team can investigate to see whether a statutory nuisance is occurring;  please read our page on noise, nuisance & anti-social behaviour and fill in the online complaint of nuisance form if you wish us to investigate
