Last week, members of the Environmental Protection team at Torridge District Council, spent the morning on Torrington Commons carrying out work to assist The Torrington Commons Conservators in their habitat management.  Much of the practical management being carried out on The Commons, has been planned by various agencies including The Torrington Commons Conservators, Devon Wildlife Trust and Natural England.

The Environmental Protection team helped to remove trees that had died due to Dutch Elm Disease and clear an area to help Pearl Bordered Fritillary and Marbled White butterflies to thrive.

The team, who are passionate about the environment and nature, thoroughly enjoyed working outdoors on the beautiful, but chilly, Commons!

Big Al, one of the Rangers, said:

'Fantastic bunch of volunteers, worked really hard, wish I could have them every day!'

Mandi Farinacci from the Environmental Protection team at Torridge District Council, said:

"Thanks to everyone for making us feel so welcome, especially Ranger Big Al and Jason.  We all had a fantastic morning, and it was fascinating to learn all about the work undertaken by the Torrington Commons Conservators.  It was a privilege to be able to help out."

Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Lead Member for Culture and Community Engagement, said:

"This was a great way for our staff members to give back to our wider community, whilst strengthening connections within the team. Being able to take part in opportunities like this reflects the council's ongoing commitment to community engagement and taking time out to help others."
