Work Experience students dive into the world of work at Torridge District Council

Students from Bideford College recently participated in a week-long work experience program with officers from Torridge District Council. The placements aim to give students a better understanding of how council services operate while enhancing their self-confidence, skill sets and emotional development through real-life work experiences.
The students had the opportunity to work in a wide range of departments, including Customer Services, Planning, Building Control, Environmental Protection, Communications, IT, Finance and Elections to gain a broad range of experiences. The council also tried to accommodate student's preferences for career progression by matching them with their own choice of work area for at least part of their placements.
The students all had an amazing week and appreciated the effort put in by staff and the wide variety of experiences on offer. "I've really enjoyed my experience, working with the Communications and Customer Service teams, it's good to be able to get an insight into what it's like working from within the council and talking with all the different people," commented one student, with another adding: "I found the week very enjoyable with different activities to do. My favourite part was helping at Caddsdown." Another student commented: "My favourite departments were Environmental Protection and Customer Services. I really enjoyed going out with the Environmental Protection team and the different jobs Customer Services asked me to complete!"
The Torridge Human Resources team is always enthusiastic to hear from schools, colleges or prospective students. Please email: hr@torridge.gov.uk or call 01237 428700 for more information.
