Members of the Ukrainian hub thank Torridge District Council for its support
On Friday 26 April, representatives and Councillors from Torridge District Council were invited to the Ukrainian Hub in Lower Meddon Street, Bideford - where they were presented with a beautifully framed painting to say "thank you" for all the support they have been given over the last two years.
The hub opened on the 13 May 2022 to provide a safe space for Ukrainian refugees who had to leave their homes and families behind and seek refuge in other countries. Local charity, Wings, created the hub as a place where fellow refugees could meet and receive advice and support.
Mariana who was living in Lviv, Western Ukraine when the war broke out said:
"Those of us that use the Hub are extremely grateful for all the support they we have been given over the last two years, not just in terms of advice and assistance but this has been a place where we can come and connect with fellow Ukrainians and the people of Bideford. It has been invaluable and everyone has been so welcoming. We wanted to show our gratitude, to Staci Dorey from Torridge District Council who has been instrumental in the support that we have received. We will forever be grateful."
Cllr. Claire Hodson, Deputy Leader of Torridge District Council said:
"It has been fantastic to see the hub in Bideford thriving with people of all ages mixing. I am very proud that as a Council we have been able to support Wings in delivering this essential service. The team have created something very special with children having the space to enjoy games and their mums the space to talk and share their experiences. It was inspiring to meet and speak to the refugees and talk through the experiences they have been through. They are extremely grateful for the support they have received, and I am proud that Torridge District Council are part of supporting such a valuable service. Well done to everyone involved!"
Andy Best, Ukrainian Hub Manager said:
"I am so proud to have been part of this project over the last two years and would like to thank all those that have supported the Wings team and the hub! Our incredible team of volunteers have worked hard to create a welcoming space and it has been heartwarming to see that guests have been able to build relationships and a community, whilst receiving support and practical assistance."
170 Ukrainians have arrived in Torridge through the Homes For Ukrainians Scheme.
