The Rockpool at Westward Ho! is due to undergo its regular annual cleaning and maintenance, which will commence this year on the 17th May. The iconic pool nestled on the rocky foreshore at Westward Ho! will be closed for four days while contractors drain the facility and clear the debris that has built up. The work will also include jet washing of the marine growth, repairs to the concrete surround and steps, and repainting of the edging and depth markings. The penstock flap and mechanism, which controls the water levels and drainage in the pool, will also be inspected and overhauled.

The pool has been in existence for over 120 years, built a little while after Westward Ho! was established as a holiday destination in the 1860's. The tidal pool remains a popular all year-round spot for daily bathers and visiting families alike and is regularly maintained by Torridge District Council.

The work follows on from the relaying of the Sandymere sleeper bridge access to the beach and regrading of the Pebbleridge track and car park following winter storm damage. Further work on the track and parking areas is also scheduled towards the end of May. These works will necessitate the closure of the Westward Ho! gate to vehicles on Monday 22nd May. The gate will reopen on Tuesday 23rd May when Sandymere car park will close for a day as part of the rolling programme of works. The car park will reopen on Wednesday 24th May.

Sean Kearney - Head of Communities and Place at Torridge said:

"The Council recognises that the Rockpool is an important facility to many locals and features on many holiday snaps taken by visitors. The work being undertaken will spruce up the facility for another year and ensure it remains in good condition for users. We appreciate everyone's patience during the short period of closure while the work is undertaken."
