Information for Candidates

Devon County Council will be holding an election on Thursday 6th May to elect 60 Councillors to represent the different areas of the County. 

Torridge District Council has 5 Councillors representing 5 County divisions. These are listed below:

  • Bideford East
  • Bideford West & Hartland
  • Holsworthy Rural
  • Northam
  • Torrington Rural

On the 6th May there will also be an election in Holsworthy to elect two Town Councillors, where the seats have become vacant.

How to stand as a Candidate

The Nomination process for the elections on Thursday 6th May starts when the Notice of Election is published - Wednesday 24th March.  Prospective candidates then have until 4pm on Thursday 8th April to complete the nomination paperwork and hand deliver this to the Deputy Returning Officer at Torridge District Council - Riverbank House.

Nomination Paperwork

To be nominated for their County Division or for Holsworthy Town Council at the elections on Thursday 6th May 2021 a prospective candidate must correctly complete and hand deliver the documents below by the close of nominations on Thursday 8th April - 4pm.

  • Nomination form for their chosen Division or District
  • A home address form
  • A consent to nomination form

If a prospective candidate is standing on behalf of a political party they must correctly complete and hand deliver the below forms:

  • A certificate authorising the use of a party name/ registered description on the ballot paper
  • A written request to use one of the party's emblems on the ballot paper

If a prospective candidate wishes to appoint an election agent this form must also be completed correctly and hand delivered with the nomination paperwork

Covid-19 and delivery of Nomination Paperwork.

To minimise contact and the length of appointments during the Covid-19 pandemic all nominations must be scanned and emailed to tom.vanstone@torridge.gov.uk. Nomination paperwork will then be checked and you will receive confirmation that it is valid. You can then request an appointment to hand deliver all the paperwork to the Deputy returning Officer at Riverbank House.

This must be arranged in plenty of time, so it takes place before the close of nominations on Thursday 8th April at 4pm.

Nominations will need to be hand delivered by the prospective candidate, their agent, or someone they trust.

If you would like a nomination pack for one of the Division mentioned at the top of this page, or for Holsworthy Town Council you can make your request by calling the Elections Team on the contact details listed on this page, or you can email tom.vanstone@torridge.gov.uk - you will need to collect the paperwork from the Riverbank Offices or provide us with contact details to send on.
