New Project aims to get over 55's active and outdoors

"Connecting actively to Nature" (C.A.N) is the name of a new Torridge project whose aim is to increase physical activity levels of individuals over the age of 55  that do little or no physical exercise. At the same time the project has been designed to encourage people to get outside and take part in these activities in the natural environment. The project has been launched in association with the County Sports Partnership, Active Devon.

The C.A.N  programme will help people to discover the combined benefits of a more active lifestyle with the psychological benefits that being outdoors in nature brings. A whole range of fun activities have been organised and made available with the help of local partners and organisations, groups and individuals. The aim is to get more people to become regular participants in one or more of the sports or activities as part of their everyday lifestyle.  The organised events are wide ranging and are for people of all abilities and levels of mobility and also complete novices or people with no experience of a sport. Most importantly they're designed to make the most of the wonderful outdoor facilities that exist on our doorstep in Torridge.

Activities lined up so far include River Kayaking, Archery, High Ropes, Surfing and Surf Skiing, and Educational Outdoor Walks.

The project is also looking for volunteers that would like to help to get people more physically active with funding available to undertake training courses to lead these. If you are a keen, passionate, friendly person and you enjoy helping to get others in your community healthy and active please do contact us or if you are able to provide any opportunities again, we would love to hear from you.

Community Engagement Officer - James Jarroudi said:

"Hopefully there's something for everyone in the range of activities announced so far but more activities are being added all the time so people should keep checking back for these. We hope this will inspire lots of people to get out and about, enjoy the environment, while doing something to boost their fitness and mental wellbeing at the same time."
