Communities Together Fund still open for Applications

Grants Sign

Earlier in the year Devon County Council and Torridge District Council set up a £60,000 joint fund to encourage parishes to work more closely together.  Grants may be for capital or revenue costs, or for a new project or service.  Registered charities, social enterprises, voluntary and not-for-profit community groups are also encouraged to apply, through their town or parish councils.

The fund was launched by Devon County Council and is managed locally by Torridge.  DCC is providing one pound for every elector in the district and Torridge is topping up this amount by 10 pence per elector, bringing the total fund to over £60,000 for 2018/19. This is another valuable addition to the Torridge's own standalone New Homes Bonus Community Grants and Councillor grants schemes with both offering further opportunities for funding.

So far this year around £32,000 has been allocated for a wide variety of projects. These range from the more mundane, but essential, replacement of fire doors in a village hall to some which might take years to mature such as the planting of trees on communal woodland. Other examples include World War 1 commemoration events, landing lights for Devon Air Ambulance to operate at night, leaflets to help a town become dementia friendly and money to support community magazines.

Lead Member for Communities and Leader of Torridge District Council - Councillor Jane Whittaker said:

"I'm really proud that the Council are able to offer so many varied ways in which communities can apply for funding for projects - be it Councillor Grants, New Homes Bonus money or the Communities Together Funding. Hopefully we can encourage community groups and parishes to make full use of all the money available. Although last year's funding was very successful there was still around £6,000 / 10% not allocated at the end. The question really is who might be out there who could use a free cash injection into their project? Time to get busy applying!"

The Fund is allocated on a town/parish basis.  To find out whether your area has money available, or to discuss other possible sources of grants, please email leisure@torridge.gov.uk or telephone 01237 428700.
