Torridge signs up to Crowdfunder Devon initiative

Crowdfunder

Torridge District Councilis delighted to now be part of the Crowdfunder Devon initiative. The platform has been set up to support community groups, start-up businesses, charities and individuals across the county to raise money from the crowd and unlock extra funding from official bodies to which they might not previously have had access.

Although Torridge has already distributed a sum approaching an incredible £1.2M to such groups through their Community Grants and Councillor grants Schemes in the last three years, this is an additional source of potential match funding for groups to tap into, whilst also spreading the word about community-based projects.

If you have a project that makes an impact to your community, supports wellbeing, works towards a better environment, rewards innovation or supercharges business ideas, then Torridge Council want to hear from you.

The initiative is for local organisations, clubs and groups, charities and parish councils looking to improve and develop their community offerings. Groups that reach 25% of their target will be able to apply for and unlock additional funding from the Torridge Councillor Grants scheme which allocates a total of £2,000 to each ward member for worthy schemes in their relative wards. In some cases Councillors may be able to combine grants to provide a larger sum.

Councillor Bob Hicks Lead Member for Economic Regeneration said:

"This is another great initiative to put money back into our communities and get funding for projects that meet the criteria of the scheme. Groups will hopefully find it easy to apply for this new funding and Councillor Grants will help to support those able to reach the threshold for consideration. To get the ball rolling all you need do is apply!"

Groups can apply, by adding their project to Crowdfunder. If they fit the bill, the Crowdfunder Devon partners could put extra money into these projects to help organisations reach their target. Details of the Torridge scheme can be found at https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/funds/torridge-community-chest or on the Councils website.

An example of where this is already making a difference can be seen from Bideford's "Little Green Town" project where the Council helped organisers to surpass their £5,000 target by providing a total of £2,700 from five councillors. The project was then also supported by Friends of the Earth and Devon County Council as well as from across the community, showing the power of the platform.
