Confess your food waste secrets to win a smart fridge camera!

Food Waste

The war on food waste has a new weapon, and you could be in with a chance of winning one!

Devon residents can confess their guilty food waste secrets to Recycle Devon to be entered in to a prize draw to win a Smarter FridgeCam worth £150.

It's the world's first wireless fridge camera that can fit inside any refrigerator. The handy gadget is aimed at helping households cut their food waste by being able to check exactly what they have in their fridge at anytime from anywhere via an app.

The average household wastes a whopping £700 worth of food every year, which adds up to a shocking 7.3million tonnes of food thrown away in the UK annually. In Devon, food makes up approximately 30 per cent of black bin or bag rubbish, which is then sent for disposal.

FridgeCam's innovative food tracking capabilities monitor use-by dates so you can know what's going off wherever you are. Its object recognition technology helps you keep an inventory of what you've got in stock and sends out automatic top-up reminders to buy things as you run out. It also encourages people to eat what they already have by suggesting recipes based on what you have in your fridge.

Councillor Mervyn Langmead - Lead Member for Waste and Recycling at Torridge said:

With the new recycling services we've introduced at Torridge we've managed to improve the overall recycling rate across the district from 41% to around 59%. However within these figures over 187 tons of food waste was collected. While we are able to recycle this and prevent it simply going to landfill any scheme or awareness campaign that helps to reduce this figure is very welcome."

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council's Cabinet Member with responsibility for waste, said:

"Food waste is a huge area of concern, and something we can all help reduce with small changes.

"We are all busy, and it doesn't matter how well we plan things, we can all relate to going to the supermarket and forgetting what's in the fridge, or trying to plan what's for dinner while sitting at work with no idea what we've got already at home.

"Try to plan your meals and check your cupboards, fridge and freezer before you do your food

shopping. Not only will you help to reduce food waste, you will save money at the same time."

The competition is being run by Recycle Devon. To enter simply visit their website and tell them which food types you waste most. You'll need to provide an email address so they can send you helpful tips and advice to reduce waste and save money and contact you if you are the lucky winner!

The prize draw will take place on Monday 17 September. See the recycle Devon website for full terms and conditions - https://www.recycledevon.org/guiltyfoodwaste

Recycle Devon is a countywide waste communications campaign which represents a partnership of 10 authorities across Devon including Devon County Council, 8 District Authorities and Torbay Council.
