Blo-karting set to become a regular feature at Westward Ho! beach

Blokart Westward Ho!

Torridge District Council has approved the use of Blo-karts in the wind sport zone at Westward Ho! beach following a 12 month trial. The wind sport zone, to the north of Sandymere Bridge, is already used by kite surfers, kite buggies and speed sailors; the addition of Blo-Karting, as an approved activity, will enable another group of wind sport enthusiasts to take advantage of the exposed conditions and flat sands, which make the area perfect for these sort of pursuits.

The decision to approve the use of Blo-karts comes following consultation with beach stakeholders. The reaction to the introduction of the sport has been very positive and a 12 month trial was used to ensure the sport could safely run alongside other activities on this area of the award winning beach. Following the positive feedback Councillors voted unanimously at Community and Resources committee on 4th June to endorse a continuation of arrangements for the sport for a further 5 years.

Lead Member for Community, Culture and Leisure - Councillor Phil Pennington said:

"I'm really pleased that the Council has opened up access to the beach to another group of beach users in what is an exciting and fast growing sport. The 12 month trial went well and we were able to show that Blo-karting could be introduced safely and without disturbance to other visitors. This decision will create yet more sporting opportunities within the community, and by drawing visitors and enthusiasts from far and wide, is also expected to have a positive effect on the local economy".

Chris Moore from the British Land Speedsail Association said:

"the BLSA, which is the UK association for Blo-Kart sailors, is really pleased with the decision by TDC, to allow our members access to this great beach. Conditions here are ideal for the sport, and we look forward to attracting more people to try out the sport of Blo-karting for themselves."
