Members re-elect Councillor Jane Whittaker as Leader at Torridge AGM

At Torridge Councils recent AGM Councillor Jane Whittaker was re-elected as Leader of Torridge District Council and Councillor Simon Inch as Chairman. Other positions confirmed included Councillor David Hurley as Deputy Leader and Councillor Dermot McGeough as Deputy Chairman.

Other key posts included the appointment of chair persons for the main decision making and scrutiny committees operated by the Council. In summary these included:

Chair Internal Overview and Scrutiny Committee - Councillor Peter Watson
Vice Chair Internal Overview and Scrutiny Committee - Councillor Ken James

Chair External Overview and Scrutiny Committee - Councillor Andrew Eastman
Vice Chair External Overview and Scrutiny Committee - Councillor Phil Pennington

Chair Licensing Committee - Councillor Tony Inch
Vice Chair Licensing Committee - Councillor Mervyn Langmead

Councillors also voted on nominees for the roles of "Lead Member" to act as an advocate or spokes person for key service areas or strategic goal of the Council. The main role of each Lead Member is to encourage communication and positive action in the area they represent. Lead Members were elected as follows:

  • Health & Wellbeing / Community safety - Councillor Philip Hackett
  • Planning & Development - Councillor Peter Watson

  • Customer Services - Councillor David Hurley
  • Democratic Support - Councillor Robin Julian
  • Housing - Councillor Cathrine Simmons
  • Waste & Recycling - Councillor Mervyn Langmead

Re-elected Leader of the Council Councillor Jane Whittaker said:

"Councillor Hurley and I really appreciate the trust that Members have placed in us to continue in our roles as Leader and Deputy Leader. We look forward to working together with all Councillors, across all parties, to deliver on all the Councils aspirations which naturally includes  it's Transformation Programme and Projects during the last term of this Councils tenure and before new elections in May 2019"
