Bideford Ladies Rugby Team celebrate 21 years with new kit from Torridge Councillors

Bideford Ladies Rugby 2017

Bideford Ladies celebrated 21 years of heritage with a party last weekend and a cheque for nearly £400 donated by Bideford Councillors. Chair of Torridge Council, Councillor Mervyn Langmead and Councillor Tony Inch each donated around £200 from their Councillor grants to sponsor the new kit, which was recognised through a formal presentation at the event.

Bideford Ladies have been having a good season and currently lie second in their league. The team founded in the 1990's through the work of John cox have been going from strength to strength with many of the youth players that started back then now progressing through to the senior team.

The Chair of Torridge Council - Councillor Mervyn Langmead said:

"Tony and I were only too pleased to respond to a request for help from the team and sponsor the ladies kit for the coming year. It's interesting that the most decorated player at the club since it was founded in 1926 is? Yes you've guessed it a lady! The clubs current captain Sarah Palmer has played for Cheltenham, Worcester, emerging England and could have been a professional netball player as well - a great achievement."

Councillor Tony Inch - Ward Member for Bideford South said:

"I'm really glad we were able to support the club in this small way as the club is a big asset to the community which regularly sees over 300 youngsters training at a weekend. It's a great organisation run wholly by volunteers, giving up their time and energy to making the club the success it is today"

Tania Jeffrey, who in her Bideford Ladies career has played in nearly every team position and is now also Treasurer said:

"I would first of all really like to thank the Councillors for their personal support and donation. When we first started the ladies team 21 years ago there were maybe one or two eyebrows raised amongst the men at the club about ladies playing rugby. But the ladies game is now well established in Bideford and is still somewhat unique in being the only ladies team in North Devon. We're always looking for more people to join in and in addition to the 25 or so players in the first team squad we also run under 13's, under 15's and under 18's ladies sides as well. Training is on a Wednesday evening  and everyone regardless of experience or fitness levels is welcome!"

For more details of training or how to get involved in both the ladies or the men's teams please contact the club on 01237 474049 or simply turn up on Wednesday training nights - 6.30pm for juniors, 7.30pm for seniors.
