Joint Torridge District Council and Chamber of Commerce Business Ratepayers Meeting

Business Meeting

Torridge District Council, in collaboration with the Bideford Chamber of Commerce, are inviting Business Ratepayers to an informative meeting to be held at Caddsdown Business Support Centre at 6.30pm on Tuesday 24th January. The event will be jointly hosted by Senior Officers from the Council, Councillor John Himan Lead member for the Economy and Alan Smith, President of the Bideford Chamber.

The event will include a guest speaker from the Valuation Office who will be outlining changes to Business Rates, which are due to come into effect from 1st April 2017. Commercial property specialists, JLL, will follow on from this by explaining how businesses can check that they have been accurately assessed under the new scheme, and how the appeal process works.

Officers from the Council will also be on hand to summarise changes to the Business Rate Relief scheme, and also to share the Councils Revenue and Capital Budget proposals for 2017/18. The event is also seen as a platform from which ideas for future cooperation and engagement can be launched, and will hopefully mark the beginning of many similar events to be scheduled over the coming year.

Lead Member for the Economy Councillor John Himan said:

"While the events is partly focused on bringing businesses up-to-date with recent change in the rates system we really hope that it will also prove to be a great opportunity for an exchange of ideas and views. Both the Council and the Chamber of Commerce are very keen to work collaboratively together and generate ideas to stimulate and grow the economy and create jobs. I hope that people representing businesses right across the district will be able to make it along to the event."

Alan Smith - President of Bideford and District Chamber of commerce, said:

"This is the first of many co-operations between the Council and the businesses in Torridge."
