Parish Plans

A Parish Plan is a document which sets out a vision of how a community wants to develop, and identifies the action needed to achieve this vision.

Parish Plans can include everything that is relevant to the people who live and work in the community, from employment and playgrounds to the design of new buildings and protection of hedges and ponds. They can include any social, environmental or economic issues. It is up to you, the community, to decide what is important to you.

A Parish Plan is a statement of how the community sees itself developing over the next few years. It:

• reflects the views of all sections of the community;

• identifies which features and local characteristics people value;

• identifies local problems and opportunities;

• spells out how residents want the community to develop in the future;

• prepares a plan of action to achieve this vision.

The Plan is an opportunity for communities to have a say in how their local areas and services are managed. It can make a real difference, both to what you do within your community, and to how you work with others to improve local quality of life.

What could a parish plan do for YOUR parish?

  • Show what services you need
  • Plan for the future
  • Influence development issues
  • Provide evidence for funding bids
  • Develop community spirit

For more information on Parish Planning please contact the Community Development Team, or  the Community Council of Devon, who can advise and support you with the development and production of your Plan.

Communities in Action database

The 'Communities in Action' online database will eventually hold every Parish Plan completed in Devon. You can make sure that your Parish Plan is on the database by going to the website, registering as a user and entering the details of your Parish Plan. The website includes a help page to guide users through the process. You can update your Plan, provide news of how the implementation of your Action Plan is going and how individual projects are succeeding.

As a publicly available database you can search on particular subject headings to see which Plans share the same issues and how they propose to address them. Or you can read through the issues highlighted in individual Plans.

This is a major, new tool for community planning.This database will, for the first time, allow parishes, Districts, the County and the general public to search across issues and see where they arise across the County.

If your parish is thinking of doing a Parish Plan, you can go online and see how other parishes in Devon have already tackled the job!
