What does my Council Tax pay for?

The Council Tax that Torridge collects from you pays for the services provided by Devon County Council, Devon and Cornwall Police, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Authority, Torridge District Council and the parishes. Torridge District Council is the "Billing Authority" that collects the tax on behalf of the other authorities. The services provided by the County Council such as education, social services and highways maintenance are the major items of expenditure, and consequently, the County Council gets approximately 73% of the tax collected in order to pay for its services. The Police get around 10%, the Fire Authority 5%, approximately 3% is passed onto the Parishes, and Torridge District Council retains around 9%

How much do I have to pay?
You will be receiving a letter before April 2015 with your new council tax bill information. In the meantime, you can always check here: pdf icon Council Tax charges for the year 2015-16 [36kb]

What do you spend it on?
Torridge District Council plans to spend £32.344m (£32.074m 2014/15) this year on providing services. £29.105m (£28.900m in 2014/15) of this comes from income we receive from grants, fees and charges which leaves a Council Tax Requirement of £3.239m (£3.174m 2014/15).

Torridge is pleased to be able balance its Budget for 2015-16 without any major impacts on the levels of services provided.

Due to funding cuts and spending pressures the Council has had to find around £1m to balance the budget.

This has been achieved by:

  • restructuring the Council's management team
  • reducing the number of staff employed through careful vacancy management
  • removing the car lease scheme
  • redirecting resources to priority areas
  • continued in year challenge and reduction of spending needs across all services

This is not the end of the story for budget cutbacks as further reductions in Government funding are expected and already being pre-planned for next year.

The Council has been able to provide over £1m of capital funds for a variety of projects (including significant regeneration initiatives) whilst continuing to provide capital funds for projects such as refurbishment of car parks and replacement of vehicles.
